Listen NowJoshua C. Okonkwo, better known by his stage name Joe Legacy (nominated for the Critérium Africain Music Awards Belgium 2020 in the Afro-Pop category), is a Nigerian-born, Swiss-based singer, songwriter, vocal/choir coach, and performing artist.
Joe's musical journey began in a children's choir in his hometown in Nigeria, West Africa. Relocating to Switzerland in his early twenties brought significant challenges — not only socially and psychologically, but musically as well. He had to adapt to new languages, cultural expectations, and musical styles. Embracing these changes, however, helped shape his versatility and broaden his artistic range across genres.
Over the years, Joe has gained extensive experience both didactically and practically, earning him the opportunity to perform on various renowned stages within Switzerland and internationally.
His passion for storytelling through music truly ignited in 2018 after earning a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Pedagogy in Pop Music, as well as in Performance & Production, from the Bern University of the Arts.
Joe Legacy offers an authentic fusion of Afrobeat, Soul and Gospel music — crafted for open-minded music lovers who appreciate rich rhythms and infectious melodies that keep audiences singing, dancing, and wanting more.
Outside of music, Joe leads a unique double life as a part-time truck driver, maneuvering 40-ton vehicles across the highways, mountains, and valleys of Switzerland. Many of his songs — including Singing Truck Driver, Jolly, Rosie, Jeje Laye, Follow Me, and Kucheza — were inspired during long drives and traffic jams, often composed right in the cabin of his truck during breaks.
As a commercial model, Joe has also lent his image to brands such as Quickline Telecommunications Switzerland, Volkswagen Switzerland, Tecan Trading AG, and others.
As a performer, Joe has built an impressive portfolio, with extensive experience and references from numerous festivals, concert venues, corporate functions, and private events both within Switzerland and internationally.
As a choir director, Joe currently leads the Moor Train Fellows in Täuffelen (Seeland) and the Church Mountain Gospel Choir in Kirchberg, Bern, among other musical engagements.
In addition to his performance and directing career, Joe is an experienced vocal coach, offering both one-to-one and group coaching sessions. He also works part-time as a music teacher at a secondary school in his local community, where he inspires and nurtures the next generation of musicians.
